Fused silica (SiO₂ glass)
Near-zero thermal expansion glass with excellent UV transmission and thermal-shock immunity.
Typical properties
Published ranges for the usual condition. Heat treatment, section size and product form move these numbers — a starting point for a search, not design allowables.
Bars show where this material sits against every other entry in the library that quotes the same property; strength scales are logarithmic.

Where it is used
Optics, semiconductor process ware, crucibles, telescope mirrors.
Processing and joining
Flame fusion; grinding/polishing; diffusion or frit bonding.
Class behaviour
Fused silica (SiO₂ glass) is a ceramics & glasses material: ionic/covalent bonding; crystalline (oxides, carbides, nitrides) or amorphous (glasses).
That bonding is what produces the class-level trade-off you inherit here — very high hardness and compressive strength, set against brittle — low fracture toughness, sensitive to flaws.
