Alumina Al₂O₃ (99.5 %) is a ceramics & glasses material: ionic/covalent bonding; crystalline (oxides, carbides, nitrides) or amorphous (glasses).
That bonding is what produces the class-level trade-off you inherit here — very high hardness and compressive strength, set against brittle — low fracture toughness, sensitive to flaws.
